Sue Flood, RN, 2 West, makes a point of telling patients that Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital is the “best hospital in the world.”
She says her theory recently was proven when she cared for a husband and wife who traveled from Pakistan to have total knee replacements from Paul Lux, MD, orthopedic surgeon, Aug. 10.
Choudry Rafique and his wife Amina Shaheen live in Lahore, Pakistan. Their son, Amir Rafique, lives in Delaware, and they have a daughter in Springfield, Ill. A friend who lives in Missouri recommended Dr. Lux, as he had performed her knee replacement.
They decided to come to Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital to receive the quality care they had heard of and to have left knee replacements performed by Dr. Lux. “They were initially skeptical of traveling and nervous about the recovery,” says son, Amir Rafique, who came to Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital to be with his parents and assist in translating for them. “But this has been a great experience, they are so appreciative of the care.”
“My mother in law really appreciated the nursing care she received day in and day out,” adds daughter in law Iram Shaukat.
Rafique and Shaheen left Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital Aug. 12, and will recover at their daughter’s home in Springfield, Ill. They plan to return to Pakistan in October.
“The best part has been the people,” Amir Rafique says. “They explained everything that they were doing and what my parents could expect. They showed a lot of empathy.”
People like Flood, who has been a nurse for 50 years. “I just love taking care of people,” she says. “I tell everyone - patients, people in the community - that this is the best hospital in the world. I truly believe it, or I wouldn’t say it.”
