Take a look at Barnes-Jewish West County’s current job opportunities.
Designing a Hospital for Efficient Delivery of Care
The new hospital was designed to support efficient care delivery, from the layout of departments to the location of supplies.
The team at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital has been preparing for the move and onboarding of new employees by developing even more efficient workflows to reduce wasteful processes before moving into the replacement hospital. The building efficiencies, along with new workflows, will enhance the care and experience of patients and team members.
The new hospital will continue our mission of improving the health of the people and communities we serve.

Environmental Services
The new 260,000-square-foot hospital features multiple storage closets for supplies and equipment on each floor. Team members will place non-hazardous trash and soiled linens in chutes that will carry those items to the ground floor of the hospital.
Central Sterile
The design of our new central sterile processing department will improve the workflow for team members. Located one floor below the operating rooms, one elevator will transport supplies up for surgeries and other procedures, and a separate elevator will take soiled instruments to the decontamination room.
The central sterile processing department is being outfitted with all new equipment. Two separate elevators will transport either clean or soiled case carts up one level to the operating rooms, endoscopy and interventional radiology floor.
Facilities
The facilities team that supports the buildings and grounds will have dedicated space on the hospital ground floor that is modern and efficient, with adjacent spaces serving numerous functions: administration, engineering shop, engineering locker room and house-wide stock room for ceiling tiles, paint and similar supplies.
Nursing and Patient Care Services
Modern patient care units are designed to enable comprehensive, integrated care to produce best outcomes, leverage technology and increase efficiencies. Ceiling lifts in half of patient rooms facilitate safer, more efficient patient movement. The inpatient floors are nearly identical – the second floor will feature an inpatient rehab space. Patient rooms are oriented exactly the same, a BJC standard in new construction.
These same-handed rooms result in improved patient safety, infection prevention, caregiver safety, and workflow efficiency.
Each unit improves the patient and family experience with all private rooms, dining on call, enhanced family accommodations and a patient TV (Oneview digital system) that enables on-demand movies, entertainment, and virtual patient education.
Thirteen pneumatic tube stations are located in the new hospital. The system will facilitate the transport of medications, specimens (which will help expedite lab work), small supplies and paperwork. The pneumatic tubes will enable our employees to spend more quality time in their patient care roles.
A consolidated radiology department will improve workflow and is adjacent to the emergency department and the intensive care unit (ICU). A short elevator ride will bring inpatients from their floors directly to the radiology department.
