Designed to relieve pain caused by joint degeneration due to osteoarthritis
St. Louis, MO, August 24, 2020 – Washington University orthopedic surgeons at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital are among the first in the St. Louis region to perform partial knee replacement procedures using a robotic-arm assisted device. This technology offers more accurate bone removal and implant placement.
Patients suffering from severe pain or stiffness resulting from noninflammatory degenerative joint disease, including osteoarthritis or traumatic arthritis, will benefit from this treatment option. Surgery is often an option when symptoms have not been relieved with techniques such as bracing, medication or joint fluid supplements.
Prior to surgery, physicians use a virtual 3D model to personalize each patient’s surgical plan based on their specific diagnosis and anatomy. The device enables surgeons to identify the implant size, orientation, and alignment. During surgery, the robotic arm provides a high level of accuracy to position the implant.
“By selectively targeting only the part of the knee damaged by osteoarthritis, we can resurface the diseased portion of the knee, without damaging the healthy bone and ligaments surrounding the knee joint,” said Charles M. Lawrie, MD, a Washington University orthopedic surgeon.
“Barnes-Jewish West County specializes in patients who require only a short stay in the hospital following surgery,” said Ann Abad, president of Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital. “By combining expert Washington University physicians, the latest technology, and a beautiful new hospital, we are able to deliver personalized care and an exceptional patient experience.”
The first procedures using this device were completed successfully in mid-July.
"As more patients require knee replacement surgery, it is important we continue to pursue options that not only resolve the medical problem, but improve the recovery experience, too,” said Dr. Lawrie. “We partner with our patients to get them back to enjoying their lifestyle as quickly and safely as possible."
Patients will be seen for their clinic appointments at the Washington University Joint and Spine Center (1044 N. Mason Road, Suite 110, Creve Coeur, MO 63141) located on the campus of Barnes-Jewish West County. To schedule an appointment, please call 888.998.8501.
