Diabetes Education

Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital offers outpatient diabetes education and nutrition counseling to support people living with diabetes. Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES) provides a foundation to help people with diabetes navigate daily decision-making related to their condition and has been shown to improve health outcomes. Our diabetes self-management education program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association and provides quality diabetes self-management education and support through the National Standards.

Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital's DSMES program offers individual education visits and group classes when appropriate. Our staff will provide an overview of diabetes, monitoring and tracking blood sugars, strategies for healthy eating, problem-solving, and support networks. The education topics are broken into flexible sessions to enhance learning and help support diabetes daily decision-making.

Our outpatient department offers both diabetes education and Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT). MNT is individualized nutrition counseling provided by a registered dietitian. These services are separate yet prove to be more effective when completed together than either service would be if offered alone. Medicare will not reimburse diabetes education and MNT if provided on the same day.

Important times to request diabetes education:

  • When you are first diagnosed with diabetes
  • Annually to assess education, nutrition, or emotional needs
  • When treatment goals are not being met and when a new medication is added to your plan
  • When new complicating factors influence self-management, such as physical, emotional, or financial limitations
  • When transitions in life or care occur, such as changes in your provider, insurance, or living situation
