What is Type 1 Diabetes?
Type 1 diabetes used to be known as juvenile diabetes or early onset diabetes because people are typically diagnosed before the age of twenty. People with type 1 diabetes are usually thin and they have the disease because their pancreas does not produce insulin, so they must take insulin. The cause for diabetes is unknown.
Types of Type 1 Diabetes:
Idiopathic type 1 diabetes - very rare and has no known cause
Immune-mediated diabetes - common and is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system attacks and destroys the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin
Symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes
The following are the most common symptoms associated with type 1 diabetes.
- Unusual thirst
- Frequent urination
- Unexplained weight loss
- Blurred vision
- Nausea/vomiting
- Extreme weakness
- Mood changes/irritability
Complications
The following are the most common complications with type 1 diabetes.
- Kidney failure
- Blindness
- High blood sugar
- Heart attack
- Stroke
- Foot ulcers
- Amputations
Treatment Options
Treatment for type 1 diabetes requires insulin. People with type 1 diabetes must have daily injections of insulin to keep their blood sugar (glucose) level within normal ranges. Other components of treatment may include the following:
- Diet
- Exercise
- Self-monitoring of blood sugar several times a day
- Self-monitoring of ketone levels several times a day
- Regular monitoring of A1c levels
