Pain Management: What to Expect
Our team addresses the complex nature of pain and how it’s affecting your life. In our evaluation, we ask you detailed questions to fully understand possible causes of pain. This information helps us determine the right treatment options for you.
To see one of our pain management doctors, you need a referral from your health care provider. Here’s what you can expect before and during your first visit:
- Review health history: Our intake nurses review the referral and other information from your health care provider, including the reason for the referral and your medical history and medications. If you have recent imaging, we ask you to bring it or have it sent to us before your appointment.
- Schedule appointment: We then schedule you for an appointment. Usually, we can see you within a week.
- Complete new patient questionnaire: The questionnaire asks about the pain you’re experiencing, any evaluations your provider has done, other treatments you’ve tried and any previous imaging tests. (Download the questionnaire, part of the new patient packet, below.)
- Review questionnaire: In the exam room, your nurse reviews the questionnaire with you to make sure it’s accurate.
- Meet with the doctor: Your doctor evaluates you, discussing the issues you’ve noted on your questionnaire and reviewing previous imaging. We may order additional imaging, if needed, which you can have done at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital. See our imaging locations.
- Discuss treatment: Your doctor talks with you about possible treatment options. Together, you and your doctor develop a personalized plan with the treatments that may work best for you.
- Review next steps: At the end of the visit, the nurse reviews your treatment plan with you to help you understand the next steps and what you need to do.
